RENOWNED SOLO ARTIST, BRENDAN BENSON ENJOYS THE SONIC QUALITIES OF ATR ANALOG TAPE.
Renowned
solo artist / songwriter (and member of the commercially successful band The
Raconteurs),
Brendan Benson loves to record in the analog domain.
On the recommendation
of his recording engineer Joe Costa , the preferred tape of choice is ATR
Magnetics.

recording to my MCI 1” 8 track recorder , I can hear a huge difference with ATR

It
LOVES my 8 track!”
Recent
recordings were done at Nashville’s Welcome to 1979 Studio, using an MCI 2”
recorder running ATR tape at 15 ips.
The project
will be mixed at East Iris (AKA House of Blues) ,most likely to ATR ¼” analog
tape to preserve the tonality and character of the vintage guitars, keyboards
and amps used on the sessions.
Brendan
will be touring later this year to promote the new record.

WINNING COMBINATION : “ARCADE FIRE” WINS GRAMMY FOR ALBUM OF THE YEAR RECORDED ON ATR TAPE
Canadian
indie-rock band “Arcade Fire” has had a momentous start to 2011.
Their
latest album “The Suburbs” recently won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Additionally
at the 2011 BRIT Awards, "The Suburbs" won Best International Album,
and Arcade Fire won the
Award for Best International Group.
Mark Lawson
(pictured), engineered the project using primarily ATR 2” analog Master tape.
The album
was recorded in a variety of locations, including random basements, a converted
church and The Magic Shop Studios in NYC.
Mark
describes the recording process:
“Every
song started its life on tape before being transferred to Logic Audio or
ProTools.
Various
analog recorders including, an Otari MTR-90 II, a Studer A827 and
a Studer A-800 MkIII we're used at different locations.
The
format was 24 track 2” running primarily at 15ips.
Various
pitch shifting and double speed experiments were also achieved using tape, on
drum/string/cymbal/piano elements.”
A final
comment about the decision to use ATR tape?
“ATR
tape sounds great!
I
was impressed with the transient response, the hi fidelity and the
tape compression is extremely musical - plus of course the smell!”

sessions.

RAK STUDIOS STILL MAKING HITS ON ATR TAPE
ATR Analog
Mastering tape has been used for several recent projects at the famous RAK
Recording Studios in London.
RAK
Recording Studio was created in 1976 by legendary record producer Mickie Most
(The Animals, Jeff Beck, Donovan etc) who converted a Victorian schoolhouse and
church hall into a state-of-the-art recording studio complex with full
residential facilities.
Over the years RAK have played host to both musical
legends and newcomers alike.
Recent
clients include, Beady Eye, Michael Kiwanaku, Westlife, Dido, Shakira, Cee-Lo,
The Feeling, Mumford & Sons to name but a few.
On a recent
project,it is gratifying to note that the studios’ analog multi-tracks were
utilized with 16 track headblocks running at 15 ips (non Dolby), to capture live performances on ATR 2” tape.
Edits were
done with a razor blade.
This
project also mixed to analog ¼” .
Long-time
Studio Manager Trisha Wegg has seen many changes in the recording industry and
notes one thing that never changes, is the need for professionally run
facilities, great sounding rooms and well maintained equipment.
The
combination of RAK Studios and ATR Magnetics Mastering Tape is still achieving
great results after 35 years.

ANALOG TAPE HEAVEN AT WELCOME TO 1979 STUDIO , NASHVILLE,TN !
Welcome
to 1979 is a retro, all
analog recording studio that strives to cater to the independent & budget
minded artists, producers and engineers.
The
studio comprises over 6,000 sq feet of
unique vintage recording environment based around a complete restored
and upgraded 1978 MCI 28 input console.
Tracking
is via JH24 analog 2” multi-track typically run at 30 ips with no noise
reduction.
Addionally
2” 16 track and 1” 8 track headstacks are available to beef up the sound.
ATR
Magnetics Studio mastering tape is the choice of tape – supplied by local
distributor ,NTS Pro Media.
Owner
Chris Mara explains:
“I
like the ATR tape – it is very forgiving if I push the levels and it handles
extremely well, running cleanly on our tape machines.”
Projects
are mixed to several ¼” machines which also provide tape delay effects.
Chris
comments that the clients like the analog workflow with no computer screens(!!)
– and despite Protools being available , many projects are tracked and mixed
entirely on analog tape.
This
workflow keeps projects focused and on budget, according to Chris.
The
studio also offers an “Analog Anywhere” service, whereby clients FTP digital
stereo mixes to get “warmed up”.
These
mixes hit ¼” tape, pass through the console and are then emailed back to the
client for mastering.
Clients
who have used this service include Dave Matthews.
